Everest Three pass trekking Question ?
Hey everyone,
Two friends and I are planning to do the Everest 3
passes trek in late April/early May. I've read a lot of things online about the
trek and the section on the trek from the Lonely Planet's book, but still have
some questions that I haven't been able to find concrete answers for yet.
We're planning on doing the trek independently, but
we were wondering if it's possible to reliably hire a guide for a day or two
along the way (for one of the passes, for example)? In addition, I've read that
it's possible to skip any of the passes along the way if you desire, but does
that mean that you simply take a longer way around or that you would have to
completely cut out that section of the trek?
Our current plan is to fly into Lukla and then 2 of
us will hike out to Jiri on the way back, while the other flies out (he has
less time). What is the best way to book the Lukla flights? Should we just book
online through the Tara Air website? Ive also heard about some tickets being
confirmed and others not. How do you make sure that you get a confirmed ticket?
If flying both ways is it best to book a round trip and then confirm the ticket
a few days before arriving back in Lukla?

better villages to stay in would be great!
We attempted to do the three passes in October 2015.
My husband and I were on our own and had no issue getting a guide for the pass.
We just asked at the lodge. That was my big concern and was so very simple. We
also met a lot of people doing the passes and we teamed up. Its not a concern
and I think with post earthquake it is much easier to get guides or porters. We
ended up with one on kongma la that was really a climbing guide but wanted the
work. I would get the guide the entire way for the passes - each one. We got to
the top and it started snowing and we were very thankful we had a guide. We
were also very fit and trained for months but the altitude got us and was very
tough. We had to also skip a pass due to weather. Expect the unexpected in
Nepal! We had to change the route but was half the fun and really enjoyed it
all. We also got a guide a few years ago just for cho la and just asked the
lodge owner and he had us someone within minutes. You pay a bit more but that
is fair. Its very, very easy to hire someone as the people need the work and
its great to employ them. They are amazing.
I would get someone at a travel agent in Kathmandu
to get the lukla flight. But when we were there this time (been three times) we
met this guy that came all the time. He just buys the ticket one way in
Kathmandu. Then whenever he finishes the trek he gets the flight out. Said its
simple and never had an issue. Its been so much quieter that I think its easier
right now. Also if you stay at a lodge in lukla - the owner often helps you
with changing flights etc. We did that and the lodge owner did it all for us
and changed our flight. We tipped him but he didn't ask for anything.
We usually fly from our international flight and
have one day max in kathmandu and that is tons of time unless you have a lot to
do. HAve a great trip, we sure loved our trip and will return yet again. Keep
healthy, its so important! Bring hand sanitizer as if you stay healthy you
remain strong:) That is one of my main tips now! We didn't get any bugs but
were really careful.
